RSPCA
Why support the RSPCA?
Did you know the RSPCA cares for more than 65,000 dogs and around 55,000 cats from the community each year? - including many pure bred animals as well as the one of a kind cross breeds.
Did you know most RSPCA shelters care for all kinds of animals including birds, rabbits, ferrets, mice, guinea pigs, geese, pigs, goats, horses, cattle, sheep, donkeys and chickens? Many of these animals are looking for a new home too!
Did you know many RSPCA shelters also care for our native wildlife: koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, galahs, cockatoos, turtles, possums, magpies and lizards? - to name just a few.
Did you know strong links have been identified between cruelty to animals and violence towards humans? Cruelty to animals may be an indicator of future violent tendencies. Children who hurt animals may also be acting out on abuse they have been subjected to at home.
Did you know that most of the common reasons for surrendering a pet to the RSPCA are the result of inappropriate choice of pet for the owner’s lifestyle and circumstances, or from a lack of care, training and socialisation by the owner?
Simply, the RSPCA needs your support to ensure ALL animals are treated with the compassion and consideration they deserve. RSPCA Australia is a non-profit, non-government charity, dedicated to animal welfare and responsible for implementing state animal protection laws.
Each year, the RSPCA in Australia accepts around 138,000 animals from the community and investigates more than 42,000 complaints of animal cruelty and neglect.
The RSPCA believes that an animal’s welfare should be considered in terms of five freedoms:
- Freedom from hunger and thirst
- Freedom from discomfort
- Freedom from pain, injury or disease
- Freedom to express normal behaviour
- Freedom from fear and distress
With ongoing community support, the RSPCA continues to provide a range of services:
- animal inspection and complaint investigation programs
- dedicated community education programs
- animal welfare centres and ambulances
- animal shelters
- reliable advice on choosing and caring for pets
- adoption programs (including www.adoptapet.com.au)
- sales of pet care products and accessories
- dog obedience training
- RSPCA accreditation programmes (currently available for pork and eggs)
In order to continue and expand our animal welfare programs, the RSPCA relies on community support. As the RSPCA receives minimal government funding, we need your help to continue our efforts to increase awareness, educate the community, prevent acts of cruelty to animals and to protect all creatures great and small.
